Eggs and Bananas

A couple of questions I was left pondering after my Wal-Mart trip tonight:

What’s up with the price of eggs? It seems like not too terribly long ago, they were 78 cents a dozen or something like that. The price must have crept up slowly without my noticing (I guess I just breeze by and grab a carton of eggs when they’re on my list), then all of a sudden around Christmas time I realized, “Whoa! Over 2 dollars a dozen?” Was there some chicken catastrophe I didn’t hear about? Or is it our whole “everything’s tied to corn” economy? Yeah, I know, inflation and all that—but this seems like more than just ordinary inflation.

And why is Wal-Mart out of bananas every other time I go now? I don’t mean there are a few speckled picked-over ones left, I mean there are NO bananas whatsoever. The banana display is totally empty. I guess no one can afford eggs anymore, so everyone’s eating bananas for breakfast?

kroger has the same price on eggs-$2.08/dozen for extra large. we bought them anyway, but i was horrified. it’s still a relatively inexpensive source of protein, however; have you looked at the price of meat lately??

bananas: the drought in the southeast extends to south america.

Eggs up here are $1.78/doz. Maybe it’s Tyson for us? I have noticed what you said, though. Eggs used to be around 80 cents a dozen not that long ago. Then they crept up to around $1. Then they skyrocketed to like $1.50. I have no idea or theory as to why. I just know it’s a pain when you’re trying to eat healthy and the healthy food costs so darn much!

I asked the produce guy at wal-mart “Why do you guys never have any bananas?” Apparently it was a long story, and I zoned out somewhere and may not have all my facts in order, but what I got out of it was 1) the produce manager doesn’t remember to always order any and 2) we’ve been having trouble with the turnover of general managers here (apparently one of them committed suicide).
My guess is that they have too much to think about to worry about bananas. There may also be a drought in Antarctica too.

i’d blame it on all the snow and bad weather. cathy from church gave us a banana tree. granted it only has two leaves on it right now, but someday maybe just maybe you can shop for bananas at our house.
