Four years

Today would have been Sasha’s “birthday” as we called it; we don’t know her real birthday so we just used the day we adopted her. She came into our lives four years ago today, and she left way too soon. David wrote an excellent post that ties together our recent doggie adventures, our love for Sasha, and our passion for animal rescue.

Menu Plan Monday 6/29/09

Not much of a menu week here. I really haven’t felt like cooking or thinking of food much lately with the heat and the extra stuff we’ve had going on. But I haven’t missed a week since I started doing this, so here it is:

Monday: Pizza at the park

Tuesday: Burgers, potato wedges

Wednesday: same

Thursday: Lemon-pepper chicken, sugar-snap peas, carrots

Friday through Sunday: I think we’ll be eating dinner with my family most nights; I’ll just be making some side dishes.

Oh yeah… there’s Russ…

Ok, this is honestly the most calm, laid-back dog I have ever seen in my life. We’ve actually forgotten he’s here a few times, and he’s only been here 24 hours! He just lies there, in the same spot, indefinitely, until you coax him somewhere else. It’s almost like not having a dog, except you have to step over him sometimes.

That may just be his personality, or the heartworms may be making it hard for him to exert much energy, or he may still be scared of his new surroundings. He’s very submissive and holds his head down a lot, but he also seems happy to be around us and wants plenty of lovin’. I hope, as he gets more comfortable with us, that he’ll come out of his shell a little bit.

Enter Russ

This is Russ.

Look familiar? Yep, he’s one of the dogs we helped rescue, along with Jennifer M., from the Lake Conway area a few weeks ago:

Russ is heartworm positive and needs to be treated, but since the AAL ranch is outside, he needs to be fostered in an air-conditioned home during the treatment (heartworm treatment can be very hard on dogs). So we’re going to be taking care of him for a little bit until he’s healthy and ready for adoption.

This morning we all headed down to the ranch to pick him up. We brought him back and let him explore the backyard, then the house, then David gave him a bath, and now he is resting in his crate. He didn’t know what to think at first about being inside; he’ll have to get used to that. He’s probably never been inside before except at his recent vet visit.

The two younger pups (the black one and the smaller black & white one) were heartworm negative and are ready to be listed for adoption now. The Golden is in Memphis at MAGRR awaiting a foster home; I don’t know her heartworm status. Unfortunately, we never caught Mr. Skittish.

UPDATE: Just found out that the Golden, named Maie, is available for adoption! So she’s heartworm negative and in good health. Check out her page.

UPDATE 2: The two younger pups, Ryder and Rover, have their own pages on Petfinder now.

Sometimes, I forget to close the pantry door…

… and, sometimes, this is what I find:

Daddy-Daughter Fun

We got Anna a little wading pool for the back yard. She wasn’t too sure about it at first, but she quickly grew to like it. On Saturday I suggested that David “take her swimming” while I caught up on some things inside. (Whoever’s with her is going to get wet anyway, so we might as well just put on a swimsuit and get in with her!) I think they had a good time, from the looks on their faces:

Ellie

dscn3827.JPG

This is sweet little Ella Claire Daniel, daughter of our Hendrix friends Chris and Megan. “Ellie” is at Arkansas Children’s Hospital right now because she’s been having seizures and they’re trying to get to the bottom of it. The original likely diagnosis is quite bad, but now they’re thinking that might not be what it is after all… but still more testing is necessary. You can read more on Megan’s and Chris’s blogs if you like. They would appreciate your prayers and support!

She’s such a sweetie, by the way… I got to visit yesterday and hold her and feed her a bottle while her mom ate lunch. It’s a little different with a gazillion wires attached to her, but we managed. She’s a doll!

Menu Plan Monday 6/15/09

It’s grill week! That means the bulk of my dinner cooking is done for the week already. But I have to remind myself that 6 burgers don’t last 3 meals anymore when Anna eats it too. I never know if she’s going to eat meat or not (I usually just give her a couple of bites of mine and see if she eats it, then give her more if she wants), but tonight she put away almost half a hamburger patty!

Visit the original Menu Plan Monday for more meal ideas.

Come on, these guys are every bit as good as Kris Allen

Last night, David and I got to hear the Fuchsia Band from County Cork, Ireland. They were performing in Little Rock at Studio Joe in a concert presented by the ACMS. (It was sold out, which means we should actually come within a couple hundred dollars of breaking even on this one!)

Here’s the thing about Irish music: you get to hear some of the best musicians in the world for their genre, but you get to pay 10 bucks a ticket and sit just a few feet away from them, and even talk to them afterwards, and sometimes even play with them in a post-concert session. Do you get to do that with pop music? No way! you pay 100 bucks and sit with 18,000 of your closest friends in Alltel Arena, and if you’re lucky and persistent enough, maybe wait in line for hours for a 10-second autograph from the artist(s).

I remember a few years ago just after I had started playing pennywhistle, I got to meet Mary Bergin at a pub in St. Louis. I know, you’re thinking, “who?” But I was thinking, “oh my gosh I’m shaking hands with Mary Bergin and talking to her and I can’t believe she’s sitting right there playing pennywhistle not five feet away from me and WOW!” Little did I know then, that’s pretty typical with this genre of music. You get to mingle with the best of the best in a casual setting—no media reporters, no bodyguards, no crazy mobs—just people like yourself who appreciate good music.

I’m pleased with my choice of entertainment.

Here’s a short video clip of the boys tearin’ it up on a reel set last night:
