Menu Plan Monday 2-23-09

Wow, I can’t believe I don’t have a blog entry between this one and last week’s menu post. Not much has happened, I guess. So here’s what the Felios are dining on this week:

Monday: Parmesan crusted chicken, green beans, French bread

Tuesday: Chicken tacos, chips & homemade salsa, fresh fruit

Wednesday: same

Thursday: Pan-seared chicken w/sausage, potatoes, and green beans (from The Cast Iron Skillet Cookbook)

Friday: same

Saturday: Homemade pizza, salad

Sunday: same

Head over to Organizing Junkie’s Menu Plan Monday to see more menus. Several hundred, in fact. I’ll bet you can find something to fix for dinner.

Menu Plan Monday 2-16-09

I’m a little later than usual with this one because since it is a long weekend, today is more like a Sunday and I’m just now getting around to planning and making my grocery list. Last week we ended up going out on Friday and moving the baked ziti to Saturday, so there’s no grill food, but there’s leftover ziti for dinner tonight. This week I’m trying to make meals out of stuff I already have and buy as little as possible (which is probably what I should be doing every week). I think I only need a few things from the store!

Monday: Leftover baked ziti, green salad, French bread

Tuesday: Grilled ham & cheese on sourdough, potato wedges

Wednesday: Chicken rice casserole, green beans, bread

Thursday: same (except maybe change the veggie)

Friday: same

Saturday: Lemon-pepper chicken, potatoes & green beans (a Green Giant frozen thing I picked up cheap)

Sunday: Oatmeal-cinnamon waffles, scrambled eggs, sautéed apples

Hey Mom, can I borrow your sweater?

This was my sweater when I was a baby. How cool is that?!

The moment I’ve been waiting for…

She has her own whistle—a little green Clarke Meg that cost 3 dollars. But I’m letting her play my Michael Burke Narrow-Bore Brass, which cost… um… more than 3 dollars. Why, exactly?!?

So do you think she can learn a jig in time for St. Patrick’s Day?

Menu Plan Monday 2-9-09

Tuesday: same

Wednesday: Beef tacos, fresh fruit

Thursday: same

Friday (David’s parents in town): Baked ziti, green salad, French bread

Chomp!

Apparently Anna has finally cut her first tooth! She won’t let me get a good look at it, but I can feel it when she gums my finger.

That sure was easy! She didn’t really show any signs of teething. Does that mean the rest of them will come just as painlessly? I hope so!

Object lessons

It’s so much fun to see Anna learning what to do with various objects—not just playing with them, but really trying to use them the right way! Here are some things I’ve seen her do lately:

Brush her hair: After I brush her hair, I’ll hand her the hairbrush and she’ll tap it on her forehead. Hey, it’s a start.

Write: While grocery shopping the other day, she really wanted my shopping list and pen, so I gave them to her (the pen was retracted, of course). Then she started putting the pen to the paper like she was trying to write.

Talk on the phone: She’ll hold the phone up to her ear and utter a little baby coo into it.

Play pennywhistle: The other day while I was practicing, I gave her one to play with. She put it in her mouth and was making sounds vocally at first; then she actually blew into it and got a little sound out. I’m so proud!

(Update) Put on socks: Ok, I had to add just one more. I was sitting on the floor today putting my socks on, and she picked up one of my socks and laid it on my foot. This is so cool!

Big brother for a day

Anna got to have a playdate with little W. Upton this morning! I think they had a good time. And I learned I can take care of two little ones at once. Imagine that! In fact, with W. there, Anna pretty much stayed where he was instead of crawling all over the house, so in some ways it was actually easier. Of course, I got a few pictures:

Menu Plan Monday 2-2-09

David grilled last night (we postponed it from Saturday to Sunday). When we grill, we make enough for about a week, hence the repetition you see here. We have guests on Tuesday, so I’m making my “company dinner” that night, then it’s back to the grill food. So it may not be a very interesting menu to read, but it sure is easy on me!

Monday: Chicken quesadillas, fruit

Tuesday (w/ guests): Roast chicken and potatoes, green beans, rolls

Wednesday: Grilled chicken sandwiches, sweet potato wedges

Thursday: Burgers, potato wedges

Friday: Chicken quesadillas, fruit

Saturday: Grilled chicken sandwiches, sweet potato wedges

Sunday: Burgers, potato wedges

The Arbonne Girl

I realized that I’ve never written about my encounter with the Arbonne girl a few months ago. So here goes.

My next-door neighbor was hosting an Arbonne party to help out a friend who was training for the business. I told her I’d be glad to come, but I probably wouldn’t buy anything; she said that’s fine, most of her friends aren’t the kind of people who spend a lot of money on beauty products, and she was just doing this to help out this friend, etc. So Anna and I went over there.

The presentation got started with the Arbonne-girl-in-training introducing herself and then handing things over to the more experienced Arbonne representative. She was this blonde, fashionable, perky thing, kind of bubbly but very driven about her line of work. Kind of like a career-woman Barbie, if you will.

And I’ve gotta say, I just wasn’t clicking all that well with the Arbonne girl.

She started off talking about the business itself. It is such a wonderful career opportunity, you can make this much money once you reach such-and-such a level, etc. She recounted her own story as a struggling business woman in management working for a large company, how even with her and her husband both working they could barely make ends meet each month, and she said, “I realized that in my current job, the most I would ever be able to make was $100,000 a year!”

Wait a minute, what? Since when is 100K a lousy annual salary? I glanced around the room, feeling fairly certain that most of the occupants of it were well under that threshold. Did I hear her wrong? No, I’m quite sure that’s what she said. What kind of person can’t make it in central Arkansas on 100K a year?

Then she started talking about the products. They’re all-natural, botanical, certified vegan (do people eat this stuff or something?), certified organic, etc. And they’re about 300 dollars. Well, that’s for the whole facial regimen—cleanser, toner, serum, and so forth. (What’s “serum” anyway? Sounds like a fancy word for “face goup” so they can charge more.)

“I realize this is a lot to spend on beauty products,” she said. “I understand… I used to be the kind of girl that wouldn’t even buy my Clinique unless it was bonus days at Dillard’s!”

Clinique? CLINIQUE? Good grief. I’m more of a Maybelline/Cover Girl from Wal-Mart kind of girl myself.

The presentation came to a close, and I hung around for a few moments flipping through the catalog like everyone else. Then, as people were getting ready to place their orders, she called out, “Oh, and I have a chart that calculates the discounts for you… don’t ask me to figure 30% off of something… I CANNOT do math!

And there it is, I thought, averting my eyes and trying not to chuckle audibly. That clears a few things up. It’s all coming together now.
