This is a cute dress…

… and I just wanted to get Anna’s picture in it before she outgrows it. That is all.

Advice Request #1: When do you…

… sleep?

Nah, just kidding. Actually, I have a question for the moms about getting stuff done.

I’ve almost figured out how to fit in the “regular”chores (stuff that needs to be done on a daily or weekly basis). I don’t exactly do Flylady to the letter, but I like some of her methods, namely the ones about having routines. I try to have a morning routine that includes stuff like making up the bed, putting away clean dishes, putting away my stuff in the bathroom and wiping around the faucets, etc. Then I try every day during Anna’s naps to do something that needs to be done weekly, like various cleaning chores and laundry (such as bathrooms on Monday, bedroom on Tuesday, etc.) I haven’t ever actually gotten all this done in a week, but it’s a start. Oh, and I exercise, which also has to be done during nap time.

What I haven’t figured out is how to fit in “irregular” chores. For instance, I do have time to put away the dishes, but I don’t have time to clean out the tupperware cabinet so I don’t have an avalanche when I try to put away said dishes. I do have time to vacuum and dust the bedroom, but I have to work around that pile of stuff on my desk that I don’t have time to sort through and figure out what to do with. And anything outside the house—the garage, the flower beds, the car—forget it!

So, moms of little ones, what works for you? Any tips? Things you’ve tried that have worked or not worked? I know I’ll have to figure this out myself, but I’m looking for ideas here. And I have only one kid and no job; most of you have multiple kids and at least a part-time job! I can’t imagine how overwhelming that is.

An Old Friend and a Photography Challenge

Last night we got to visit with my college friend Diana, her husband Tom, and their three boys. We all convened at my parents’ house and had dinner out there. It was the first time they had seen Anna, and the first time I had seen her younger two boys. (They live in the DC area now and don’t make it down this way too often, understandably!)

I took my camera and soon discovered how hard it is to photograph three active boys! (Becké and Anna W, y’all have quite a task!) Most of them were blurry. I got one of all three together, or at least the tops of their heads:

I did it…

I exercised six days this week! Jogging twice, step aerobics video twice, toning video twice. If I could just keep that up for a few weeks, I would probably see a big difference in how I look and feel.

I think I deserve a slice of that leftover lemon pie in the fridge!

Oh bother.

Big Birthday Bash

David, Anna, and I traveled to Tulsa this weekend for my niece Addison’s first birthday party. (Sasha had to stay behind, but she had rather nice accommodations.) Happy birthday, Sweetie!

Addie had her own little cake to get into!

She got lots of presents that make lots of noise. (We, however, did not get her anything that makes noise. Andy and Jennie, remember that when Anna turns 1! )

Well this is new…

I bet the engineers at the SwaddleMe Blanket Design and Production Headquarters didn’t count on this:

Ok, so maybe the legs are out, but those arms aren’t going anywhere!

You know, I see the potential to make some money here. I need to offer Anna to test swaddling products. They obviously didn’t pick the right babies.

Dressed for the Occasion

Happy 4th, everyone!

Zzzzzz…

I know you’ve all been on the edge of your seats about this, so just to inform you, I’m sleeping better. I was a little worried—I was beginning to think I had a real insomnia problem that might require professional help. But for about four or five nights now I’ve been able to fall asleep within a few minutes and have gotten several hours through the night. David, however, didn’t get much last night—Anna was fine, but Sasha kept him up during the thunderstorms.

Happy Birthday…

… to Sasha! We adopted her 3 years ago today. It seems like it’s been longer; I can’t remember what it was like before she came along. And I must take this opportunity to say: If you’re going to get a dog, please adopt one. That’s all. I won’t go into a full speech right now, or it wouldn’t be a “snippet.”

Sunday Morning Breakfast

I’ve figured it out—scrambled eggs and chai. The scrambled eggs keep me from starving during church, and the chai keeps me from falling asleep. Glad I finally got that worked out.

An Unpleasant Surprise

My mom brought over my baby book for me to look at, and I left it on the kitchen counter. Some time later, David asked me, “What’s with the creepy baby book?” “Creepy baby book?” I asked. “Yeah.” “My baby book is creepy?” “Yeah.” Then I figured out what had happened. He was flipping through it, apparently never having heard of the tradition of saving a lock of baby hair from one’s first haircut.

Sleeping Through the Night

Anna is. I’m not. After three months of fighting sleep, making myself wake up even when I’m very sleepy, and only sleeping for a few hours at a time, now I have to learn how to sleep through the night. I hope that happens soon. I’ve started working a Sudoku when I get into bed to clear my mind of everything else and focus on one mind-numbing thing.

We did it! Well, sort of. Once, anyway.

Anna went all through the night from 10 PM until 8 AM without a feeding! She’s been eating somewhere between 4 and 5 AM usually (which I still consider nighttime!), and a couple of times she pushed it until 5:30, but I didn’t expect her to just take a big leap like that. I realize that this probably isn’t going to be a regular occurrence just yet, but since I know she’s done it once, maybe sleeping through the night is just around the corner.

I know what you’re thinking—I should feel great! Well, unfortunately I still didn’t get any more sleep; I didn’t get to bed until 11, then I got up 3 times with Anna to help ease her fussing and keep her from waking up completely (and each time it takes me a while to get back to sleep), and I woke up at 5:20 thinking surely she was going to wake up any moment and eat, then pretty soon I was starving and had to eat breakfast, then I eventually got back into bed but still couldn’t sleep, wondering how long she was going to last. So Anna got 10 consecutive hours of sleep and I got about 5, in pieces. What’s wrong with this picture? Oh well… things are bound to change soon. I think.

UPDATE: She did it again! It’s actually 8:45 and she’s still asleep, but starting to stir. Maybe we’re there? I hope so! I think I got a little more sleep last night, and tonight is David’s night to get up with her, so I should sleep even better.
